I'm a big fan of small internet communities.

Looking forward to what's possible as more people consider café-like alternatives to corporate social networks.

I think that's enough internet for today

Let's see what the pocket sized internet is doing

We played Clue with the kids this evening and now after hearing it I am forever committing to saying “Colonial” Mustard with the “leed” pipe

Please boost this thread so more people can learn about and understand how the GOP is trying to gain power in any small corner they can. This is how they fill their pipeline. This is how they control voter perceptions from the local to the national level.

We need more education and more resources to thwart them. We need more support. Where is the equivalent investment to defend our democracy at these micro levels? We needed this problem solved yesterday. Our nation may depend on it.

Since Mastodon saw its initial popularity circa 2017, I've noticed that most users and those reporting on it either don't think about the Fediverse as anything more than Mastodon, or treat its history as beginning with Eugen Rochko and the beginning of Mastodon. In fact, Mastodon is the latest in a long line of federated social networks going at least back to Identi.ca, and though I wasn't around for all of it, I find this history pretty interesting. (Thread; boosts welcome!)

I gotta buy cheaper domains for my silly projects. 😅

Just renewed https://thedusting.zone so give it a visit! It’s a satisfying little site if you need a brain break.

Give a man a fish. Sure, why not? Go around giving strangers weird fish gifts. Who cares

Noticing a lot of weekend chatter about helping new people onboard and I literally cannot stress the enough - the experience changes entirely once you follow about 200 people.

Then your home timeline fills up, and you find more people to follow/weed out some of the randos you followed at first.

This place is NOT going to get "busier" if you do not follow people; there are so many posts going on that you are not seeing.

Use "Federated" and "Local" find ppl; follow liberally. It works.

So, the European Union has set up its own Mastodon instance, EU Voice, as an official channel/platform for all its many institutions - what a great initiative https://social.network.europa.eu/about

The McRib is back. It's killed three guards and is looking for weaknesses in the perimeter fence.

Twitter was never a healthy "public square" for most of us. Let's not rewrite history while eulogizing the hellsite.
Twitter was a frightening battleground where we managed barely to claw out an uneasy existence amidst the worst violent neo-Nazi extremists who constantly published our home addresses, threatened our kids' lives, and sent hordes of racist trolls into our mentions.
The same principles that allowed us to survive uneasily on Twitter will be required here in the #fediverse. Community defense, thoughtful pressure on moderation policies, and eternal vigilance.
There are no safe spaces but those we make safe through constant effort. We keep us safe.

Honestly, I’m really enjoying my experience here, which enables me to see the possibilities…although getting the 411 about which instance to join helped

It’s not a perfect alternative to Twitter but since I’ve been focusing on making the shift from #causeascene, which wouldn’t work at all here, to building a supremacy, coercion, discrimination, and exploitation free future, my engagement had already changed

Good morning! A post just rolled across my fedi-timeline saying not to post about politics on Mastodon, so I'm here to remind you that:

1 "politics" refers to decision-making about how to live together in groups
2 choosing to not participate in political discussion is saying you support the status quo, and is a political stance
3 abstaining from politics because you feel safe from its impacts is a privilege and a choice to abandon your more vulnerable neighbours

Therapist: You need to stop doing weird things, going out might help

Me: I went to the park today

Therapist: There you go! I hope you got something from that

Me *opens coat* this duck

One thing about this remains clear: no system of dominance and hierarchy can provide the necessary framework that we need. None of them can remain. To try and salvage the bones of any corpus of empire is to offer it the opportunity to reproduce itself.

Constantly buoyed by something the writer Christina Sharpe says about how liberation will require 'all our beautiful imaginings' and how this doesn't mean wading through a cacophony of flowery expressions but fielding and finding connections between deep, unvarnished explorations of being based on where we present the world, all its lacerations, ruptures, and places for possibility. I sit with this thought a lot.

I’ve been thinking about this for the last couple of days: I see Mastodon as a sort of gateway, rather than the final destination.

All this ActivityPub and federation stuff is pretty exciting because you can conceivably interact with mates from anywhere. I guess WebMentions etc allow you to also do that, but I never personally got along with it in its current form.

Just having my own instance of Mastodon again has made me feel like I’

Here's something I've learned from 20 odd years in the #PublicSector:
A functional society costs money. If you don't spend that money, you pay in human misery.

So you can pay now, through #tax, or you can pay later through #privatization or charity or again through tax - but paying now will always be cheaper in the long run. It's not #socialism it's #EnlightenedSelfInterest

This applies to most things but right now I'm thinking about #ClimateChange

Okay friends
